Pancreatitis is a serious condition in which the pancreas is inflamed (swollen), which can lead to severe pain, digestive issues, and various complications. For patients with recurrent acute or chronic pancreatitis, it’s important to have a care team made up of different specialists. Pancreatitis can affect multiple bodily functions, so having a team of experts work together helps manage the condition better. At Mission: Cure, we advocate for a multidisciplinary care approach to ensure that pancreatitis patients receive the best care possible.
What is Multidisciplinary Care?
Bringing Experts Together
A multidisciplinary care team brings specialists from different medical fields together to care for patients. For pancreatitis patients, this team may include:
- Medical Pancreatologists: Experts in diagnosing and clinically or medically managing pancreatic diseases and essential for long-term care.
- Registered Dietitians: Provide nutritional guidance for pancreatitis patients.
- Interventional Gastroenterologists: Offer both invasive and non-invasive endoscopic procedures when necessary.
- Pancreatic and General Surgeons: Offer surgical options when necessary.
- Endocrinologists: Manage diabetes and other hormone issues.
- Pain Management Specialists: Focus on managing chronic pain from pancreatitis.
- Advanced Practice Providers: Ensure ongoing support and follow-up care tailored to the needs of the patient.
- Radiologists: Ensure expert review of imaging and perform interventional procedures when needed.
This team-based approach involves providers talking to each other regarding patient needs and care and allowing patients to see multiple specialists in one visit. This improves communication and ensures all aspects of the patient’s condition are addressed, saving time and leading to better treatment.
Inclusive Referrals System for Easier Access
An inclusive referral system means patients can be referred by different sources, like other doctors, hospitals, or even themselves. This makes it easier for patients to access the specialized care they need and benefit from a multidisciplinary team.
Quick Access to Specialists
For pancreatitis patients with complex needs, it’s important to see specialists quickly. A coordinated care team makes sure specialists are available without delays.
Ongoing Improvements in Care
Improving care and adding new specialties, such as mental health experts or infection specialists, helps multidisciplinary teams better meet patients’ needs. This ensures they get the most up-to-date and effective treatments.
The Benefits of Coordinated Care for Pancreatitis Patients
Improved Patient Outcomes
A multidisciplinary care team leads to better results, fewer complications, and less time in the hospital. Research shows that working with an integrated care team improves clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction in chronic conditions like pancreatitis, where earlier intervention and effective management make a big difference in a patient’s quality of life and health.
Better Communication and Coordination
When specialists from different areas regularly work together, communication improves and mistakes are reduced. This coordination is especially valuable for complex conditions like pancreatitis, which affects many areas of a patient’s health.
Patient-Centered Care
A multidisciplinary team provides care that addresses all patient needs—physical, nutritional, and emotional. This approach leads to better overall care and a better experience for the patient.
Mission: Cure's Visit to Massachusetts General Hospital's Pancreatitis Clinic
At Mission: Cure, we saw firsthand how patient-centered, multidisciplinary care can transform the experience for pancreatitis patients. During our recent visit to Massachusetts General Hospital’s Pancreatitis Clinic, we observed how their approach integrates care from multiple specialists into one streamlined visit. We met with patients during their clinic visit, shadowed their appointments, and witnessed the team’s coordinated efforts to meet each patient’s physical, nutritional, and procedural needs. This approach allowed patients to receive comprehensive care in a single day, reducing the psychological and financial burdens of multiple appointments.
Meet the Team
From the day I took care of my first patient with pancreatitis, I knew multidisciplinary care was required. What I also observed was that many patients traveled from quite far away, and due to the nature of their disease, they required up to 5-6 sub-specialists (surgery, medical pancreatology, pain management, radiology, interventional GI, endocrinology, etc.). Each of these visits created a huge burden, both psychologically and financially. Imagine requiring 6 visits every few weeks.
My vision for our multidisciplinary clinic was to streamline visits into one multidisciplinary day with easy access to other subspecialists in order to minimize the burden on patients and caregivers. In addition we are able to provide expert multidisciplinary care to patients in a streamlined manner.
I was very lucky to have colleagues in each of these specialty areas who care about patients in the same way I do and immediately agreed to create this program. Parallel to this we were able to develop a dedicated inpatient multidisciplinary service, led by friend and colleague Casey Luckhurst. Together, we have created this center whose focus is to improve the lives of patients with pancreatic disorders and advance the field.
